This special series on “Oncology Nursing” is edited by Drs. Margaret I Fitch and Annie Young. The aim of this special series is to profile the development of oncology nursing as a specialty – its growth and development around the world. One cannot have a quality cancer control system in a country without nursing. Hence it is important to understand how to development and grow the practice in tandem with research and education. Leadership and policy have a significant role to play in the progress.

Margaret I Fitch, RN PhD, is a Professor (Adjunct) at the Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing, University of Toronto, in Canada. She has a background in oncology nursing and psychosocial oncology. Her long-term research focus has been on coping and adaptation of patients/survivors and families across the cancer trajectory. Psychosocial care in cancer and survivorship are specific foci for her work. Dr. Fitch also serves as Editor-in-Chief of the Canadian Oncology Nursing Journal and is on the faculty at the University of Rwanda, in Kigali, through New York University.

Annie Young, Emerita Professor of Nursing at WMS, and Honorary Nurse Consultant, UHCW, has recently retired from clinical practice. Annie works part-time at the University, initiating and implementing supportive care research projects including cancer-associated thrombosis.  Appropriate palliative care admission, prehabilitation for cancer patients having chemotherapy, new technologies for monitoring side effects of cancer therapies are special interests.

Educationally, her focus is on teaching and exchange programmes in cancer care in the ‘Global South’. Annie is a founder member of the UK Global Cancer Network and chair of the Global Power of Oncology Nursing Organisation, showcasing the remarkable work of oncology nurses working in underserved populations, worldwide.
