This special series on “Medical Oncology: Challenges in 2022” is edited by Drs. Stergios Boussios, Elie Rassy, Aruni Ghose and Matin Sheriff. The aim of this special series is to include contributions that highlight the importance of multidisciplinary and holistic approach. This special series seeks to accomplish to educate the oncology community about what diagnostic and the therapeutic strategies proffers in clinical practice.
Stergios Boussios, MD, MSc, PhD, FRCP

Dr. Stergios Boussios [MD, MSc, PhD, FRCP] trained in Medical Oncology at the Oncology Department of Ioannina University Hospital, Greece (2010–2013). He was awarded European School of Oncology (ESO) and Hellenic Society of Medical Oncology (HeSMO) fellowships for clinical and laboratory research at the Royal Marsden Hospital, London, UK (2014–2015), and specialized in ovarian cancer. In 2017, Dr. Boussios was selected by the European Society of Medical Oncology (ESMO) Fellowship and Award Committee to be part of the ESMO Leaders Generation Programme. He holds a PhD from the University of Ioannina, Greece. Since April 2018, Dr. Boussios has served as consultant at the Department of Medical Oncology, Medway NHS Foundation Trust, Kent, UK. In October 2020, Dr Boussios was awarded Honorary Senior Lecturer (Ass. Professor) by the King’s College London (School of Cancer and Pharmaceutical Sciences) and is involved in research and postgraduate teaching. He also serves as Associate Royal College Tutor in Medicine in Medway Faculty Group in Kent, UK. In January 2022, Dr. Boussios was appointed Lead in the Department of Research and Innovation in Medway NHS Foundation Trust. He is actively involved in translational research in cancer and is principal investigator in phase I-III studies. Boussios’s research interests include cancer of unknown primary site, urological cancers, gynecological cancers, new drug development and cancer diagnosed in pregnancy. Dr. Boussios has been guest editor or editorial board member of many highly esteemed journals. His H-index Scopus is 20 and has 1,000 citations.
Elie Rassy, MD, MSc, MPH

Dr. Rassy is currently a senior resident (clinical and research activity) at Gustave Roussy, one of the world’s leading cancer-research institutes and teh largest comprehensive cancer center in Europe. His current scope of research focuses on precision Oncology and early-stage cancer treatments. As a young Medical Oncology fellow, he has contributed to over 150 peer-reviewed publications and several book chapters, including the Oxford Textbook of Oncology, mainly focusing on cancers of unknown primary, urogenital and gynecological tumors. He is an active speaker, lecturing on subjects related to these malignancies nationally and internationally.
Aruni Ghose, MBBS
Medical Oncology Department, St. Bartholomew’s Hospital, London, UK
Dr. Ghose graduated from Nil Ratan Sircar Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata, India in 2019 with distinction in Pharmacology. In 2020, he began his Foundation Year 1 at Medway NHS Foundation Trust in Kent. Due to involvement and interest in a variety of clinical audits in oncology, he was also the Junior Clinical Lead in Transformation of Cancer Services. Dr. Ghose achieved Good Clinical Practice (GCP) Certification and was later offered an Honorary Research Fellow post in Medical Oncology. In clinical capacity, he continued his Foundation Year 2 at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital in London, where he gained clinical experience in Oncology which included clinical trials. Dr. Ghose was also an Honorary Research Fellow in Genito-Urinary Oncology at the Mount Vernon Cancer Centre, London in academic capacity. During this time, he has been involved in multiple international presentations, conferences (including ASCO, NCCN, BTOG) and publications (original research and review articles) related to oncology. Dr. Ghose has also been a part of the Acute Oncology Teaching Programme offered to students from Queen Mary University of London. He is passionate about immuno-oncology, cancer biomarkers and clinical trials.
Matin Sheriff, MBBS FRCS FRCS(Urol) FEBU
Department of Urology, Medway NHS Foundation Trust, Kent, UK
Professor Matin Sheriff trained at internationally renowned Institute of Urology, London.
He is currently the Specialty Lead for Urology & Lead Cancer Surgeon at Medway Foundation NHS Trust, Kent.
He is founder & director of MISTIK (Minimally Invasive Surgery Teaching in Kent) & in partnership with Canterbury Christchurch University introduced master’s programme in minimally invasive surgery.
