Dr. Carmen Chan is an oncology nurse and an academic focusing on the area of cancer symptom management and psycho-oncology.
One of her funded project is a prospective study of lung cancer. Her study is the first to identify “symptom clusters” in Chinese patients with advanced lung cancer, and the first to develop a comprehensive psychoeducational package to successfully reduce several symptoms together as a cluster. Her other research works on cancer and palliative care include management of pain, breathlessness, fatigue, anxiety, and depression. She has led a research theme group in the school to advance the research on cancer and palliative care. Current themes of the group include cancer prevention, supportive care, and pediatric oncology.
Dr. Chan has published widely and served as editors and reviewers in journals related to cancer treatment and supportive care. She was elected as honorary advisor of the Hong Kong Palliative Nursing Association and the Asia link nurse of the International Society of Nurses in Cancer care.
Dr. Chan also has rich experience in nursing programme development and management. Besides leading the Bachelor of Nursing programme in the school, she is also an active member of Programme Advisory Committee in CUTV community College, School of Science & Technology in The Open University of Hong Kong and Associate Degree Programme of the University of Hong Kong. Dr Chan is also a member of the Accreditation Committee of Nursing Council of Hong Kong to accredit many nursing programmes in Hong Kong.
