Dr. Toevs spent her undergraduate years at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. She went to medical school at East Carolina University School of Medicine. She spent one year at Johns Hopkins Hospital completing a generally surgery internship, followed by two years at the National Institutes of Health. She completed her general surgery training at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. Her surgical critical care training was at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She subsequently obtained a Masters in Bioethics and board certification in Hospice and Palliative Medicine and Neurocritical Care. She is currently employed as a trauma/critical care surgeon, acute care surgeon with Envision Acute Surgery and is Trauma Medical Director at Terre Haute Regional Hospital. She is clinical faculty for Indiana University School of Medicine and Marion University College of Osteopathic Medicine. Nationally, she has served at the chair of the Surgery Section of Society of Critical Care Medicine and is active in many national organizations. She speaks frequently on geriatric trauma, ethics, palliative medicine in the ICU and surgical palliative care.
